News Breaking: FUTA unions protest arrest of members by police
Union leaders of the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria University (SSANU) and Non Academic Staff Union (NASU) in the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) have alleged the indiscriminate arrest of their members.
There had been a protracted internal crisis between the unions and the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Adebiyi Daramola, who was accused of gross misconduct.
According to the unions, a detachment of the police Force from the Ondo State Command laid a siege to the campus entrance since Monday to arrest workers most of who are its members.
FUTA’s NASU chairman, Adebayo Aladerotohun told The Guardian in Akure that those arrested were charged to court immediately by the police. He said no fewer than 70 of its members have been arrested, some in their homes at “unholy hours.”
He went on: “No one could ascertain the reasons behind the arrest of some of our members at the school gates while some were arrested in town.
“I couldn’t get near the court because information available to us showed that the two union leaders are the targets for arrest but I will get across to you immediately we have the information about what they were arraigned for.”
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Femi Joseph, who confirmed the incident, said the FUTA workers arrested were those causing a breach of the peace in the institution.
Joseph said some of them assaulted some of his men, who were in the university to maintain the peace.
